The Web entity, whose success is probably more amazing than any other dot-com–in a sense more than even Google or Facebook for that matter, will turn 10 two days hence.

Yes, you may have guessed it right already–it is the Wikipedia, which is scheduled to start its 10th anniversary celebrations. The company was founded on January 15, 2011 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger and its slogan is “The free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.”

Why Wikipedia’s success can be termed as the most amazing is obvious–it is owned by a non-profit organization and runs mostly on charity and donation money raised through an annual campaign addressed by its founder Jimmy Wales, and yet give the for-profit organizations a run (not for their money). Wikipedia’s content quality and accuracy has been regarded as good, perhaps even better, than Encyclopedia Britannica, as contributors continue to volunteer.

As per Alexa, Wikipedia is ranked No. 8 as of today.
